Garfield, who lost his father when he was a year and a half old, filled his letters to his own children with warmth and love. As a congressman, he was often in Washington separated from his family back in Ohio, and he wrote to them eagerly. He routinely addressed his children as “My dear ones,” and signed off as “Affectionately your papa.” The children wrote to him just as often, with unfailing sweetness and love. They would report on such matters as the words they had missed in their spelling drills and the treats their mother had given them, and they tried to please their father with promises such as “I am going to try to be perfect to morrow.”

In this 1875 letter, Garfield drew the puckered mouths of all his family members making kisses: his wife (“mama”); his mother (“grammy”); his daughter, Mary; and his sons, Harry, James, Irvin, Abram, and “baby” Edward.
